Hi, I;m Denise
About Me
I've spent over 20 years in UK classrooms — teaching, learning, and quietly forming some very strong opinions about how children actually thrive.
My grandson has lived with me and his dad (my son) since he was just one year old. For years, I was childminding while he went to mainstream school — but it became clear that the school environment simply wasn't working for him. With his complex needs, he was struggling. The learning wasn't happening, and I could see it.
In 2018, my son asked me to take on his education at home. It felt like a natural step — I was there, I knew him better than anyone, and I believed we could do this differently.
And we have.
It hasn't always been easy, and I won't pretend otherwise. But watching him discover that learning can actually be enjoyable — that it can happen through play, through curiosity, through the small ordinary moments of a day — has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.
My late husband always believed in what I was doing. That quiet confidence has stayed with me through everything, and it's woven into everything I create here.
I'm not an expert in everything. What I do know — from the classroom, from childminding, and from years of learning alongside my grandson — is that children flourish when they feel safe, seen, and genuinely engaged. That belief is at the heart of every resource, every booklet, and every word on this website.
Why Play Learning grew from all of that. It's not just a collection of resources — it's what I wish had existed when we started out. A calm, knowledgeable voice in your corner, saying: You can do this, and your child is going to be okay.
