New Chapters, New Horizons in Learning

As September begins, it often feels like a time for fresh starts. New routines, new plans, and new subjects can create a buzz of excitement. Yet, learning doesn’t always require a dramatic overhaul. Sometimes, a new chapter begins with something small—a question over breakfast, a walk outside, or a new book discovered together. It could even be a child suddenly curious about a topic you've never discussed before.
At Why Play Learning, we believe those moments are significant. This month, we celebrate new adventures, fresh resources, and the many ways children learn when given the confidence and freedom to explore.
There have been several developments in education over the summer. Here are a few things families may want to be aware of.
🏠 Home Education and the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026
The Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act is now law. However, this does not mean that every proposed change affecting home-educating families will happen immediately. The legislation includes future changes regarding Children Not in School registers, information held by local authorities, and specific circumstances where additional procedures may apply.
Some parts still require implementation arrangements, regulations, or further guidance before they operate in practice. For families already home educating, it is essential not to assume that every headline or social media post describes something you need to do today. We will continue to follow the official information and update our Education Updates page as the details become clearer.
🌱 SEND and Education Outside School
The Government is also continuing its wider review of SEND provision. A separate consultation is currently looking at Education Otherwise Than At School (EOTAS), which focuses on education for children unable to attend school for health reasons, as well as the use of accredited online education.
It's important to remember that EOTAS and elective home education are not the same thing. This consultation remains open until 18 September 2026, and parents and carers are invited to contribute their views. You can find fuller explanations, links, and future updates on our Education Updates page.
🏴☠️🦖 Our Exploring Through Play Adventures Have Begun!
One of the most exciting things happening at Why Play Learning is our new Exploring Through Play series. These books aren't about sitting down and working through pages in order. They are invitations to become part of the subject.
Build a pirate world, create a crew, make maps, solve problems, and set off on adventures where stories, imagination, and learning naturally intertwine. So many adventures await for just £6.50!
Children can talk, build, draw, invent, investigate, and create—there is no single “right” way for the adventure to unfold. Additionally, there’s a free Pirate Adventure Resource Pack to help families carry the adventure even further.
Next, we travel far back in time!
Exploring Dinosaurs Through Play transforms prehistoric learning into an experience children can enjoy through investigations, imagination, and play. Fossils, footprints, dinosaur habitats, discoveries, and adventures can become starting points for science, communication, maths, creative thinking, and storytelling—often without children even noticing how much learning is taking place.

🚀 And Where Are We Going Next?
We've sailed the seas and travelled millions of years into the past. So, perhaps there is only one direction left to go... UP.
Something rather exciting is currently being prepared at Why Play Learning. There may be rockets, planets, aliens, and even a slightly unexpected astronaut... 🚀 Exploring Space Through Play is coming soon.
We won't reveal everything just yet, but prepare your cardboard boxes, save a little kitchen foil, and keep gazing at the night sky. Our next adventure is going to take us a long way from home.
🍂 A Gentle Learning Idea for September
Signs of Autumn
September is a wonderful time to simply notice the world around us. Take a walk around the garden, the park, your street, or somewhere further afield. See if anything is beginning to change. Can you find:
Leaves beginning to change colour?
Seeds or berries appearing?
Conkers or acorns?
Different birds?
Cooler mornings?
Changes in the shadows?
Something you hadn't noticed before?
There doesn't need to be a worksheet or a list of facts to memorise. Talk about what you notice. Take photographs, collect fallen leaves, draw something, or look up the answer to a question when you get home. One observation can lead almost anywhere. That’s learning.
The Importance of Curiosity
Curiosity is a powerful tool for learning. When children ask questions, they engage with the world around them. This engagement can lead to deeper understanding and a love for exploration. It’s okay if they don’t find all the answers right away. The journey of discovery is just as important as the destination.

Our FREE September Activity Calendar is ready, filled with simple ideas that families can choose from whenever they like.
The dates are there as inspiration—not instructions. Alongside it, the September Why Play Learning Magazine takes those ideas further with more than 30 activities to explore throughout the month.
Use one, use ten, do them in order, or completely ignore the dates. Learning doesn’t lose its value just because it happens on the “wrong” Tuesday!

What has your child become curious about recently?
Perhaps it's space, dinosaurs, or how a lock works. Maybe they want to know why leaves change colour, where their grandparents grew up, or whether fish sleep. Children’s questions can lead us in directions we never planned. Sometimes, those unexpected detours become the best learning experiences.

A new academic year can make us feel as though we should have everything organised. But we don’t. Children don’t need every month mapped out before it begins. They need opportunities to ask questions, follow interests, try new things, change their minds, make mistakes, laugh, explore, and discover.
Some days will be wonderfully productive, while others may not be. Both are part of life. As September begins, perhaps the best plan is simply to stay curious about where the next question might lead.
