New Chapters, New Horizons
As September begins, there can sometimes be a feeling that everything needs to start again.
New routines. New plans. New subjects. New expectations.
But learning doesn't need a dramatic fresh start.
Sometimes a new chapter begins with something very small — a question over breakfast, a walk outside, a new book discovered together, or a child suddenly becoming curious about something you've never discussed before.
At Why Play Learning, we believe those moments matter.
This month we're celebrating new adventures, new resources and, as always, the many different ways children learn when they are given the confidence and freedom to explore.
There have been several developments in education over the summer, so here are a few things families may want to be aware of.
🏠 Home Education and the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026
The Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act is now law, but that does not mean that every proposed change affecting home educating families happened immediately.
The legislation includes future changes around Children Not in School registers, information held by local authorities and particular circumstances where additional procedures may apply.
Some parts still require implementation arrangements, regulations or further guidance before they operate in practice.
For families already home educating, it is therefore important not to assume that every headline or social-media post describes something you need to do today.
We'll continue following the official information and updating our Education Updates page as the details become clearer.
🌱 SEND and Education Outside School
The Government is also continuing its wider review of SEND provision.
A separate consultation is currently looking at Education Otherwise Than At School (EOTAS), education for children unable to attend school for health reasons, and the use of accredited online education.
It's important to remember that EOTAS and elective home education are not the same thing.
This consultation remains open until 18 September 2026, and parents and carers are among those invited to contribute their views.

🏴☠️🦖 Our Exploring Through Play Adventures Have Begun!
One of the most exciting things happening at Why Play Learning is our new Exploring Through Play series.
These books aren't about sitting down and working through pages in order.
They are invitations to become part of the subject.
Build a pirate world, create a crew, make maps, solve problems and set off on adventures where stories, imagination and learning naturally become tangled together.
So many adventures for just £6.50.
Children can talk, build, draw, invent, investigate and create — and there is no single “right” way for the adventure to unfold.
There's also a free Pirate Adventure Resource Pack to help families carry the adventure even further.
Then we're travelling much further back in time!
Exploring Dinosaurs Through Play turns prehistoric learning into something children can experience through investigations, imagination and play.
Fossils, footprints, dinosaur habitats, discoveries and adventures can become starting points for science, communication, maths, creative thinking and storytelling — often without children even noticing how much learning is taking place.
And, just like Pirates, there are printable resources on the free resources page to help continue the adventure.
🚀 And Where Are We Going Next?
We've sailed the seas.
We've travelled millions of years into the past.
So perhaps there is only one direction left to go...
UP.
Something rather exciting is currently being prepared at Why Play Learning.
There may be rockets.
There may be planets.
There may be aliens.
There may even be a slightly unexpected astronaut...
🚀 Exploring Space Through Play is coming soon.
We won't give away everything just yet, but prepare your cardboard boxes, save a little kitchen foil and keep looking at the night sky.
Our next adventure is going to take us a very long way from home.
🍂 A Gentle Learning Idea for September
Signs of Autumn
September is a wonderful time simply to notice.
Take a walk around the garden, the park, your street or somewhere further afield and see whether anything is beginning to change.
Can you find:
Leaves beginning to change colour?
Seeds or berries appearing?
Conkers or acorns?
Different birds?
Cooler mornings?
Changes in the shadows?
Something you hadn't noticed before?
There doesn't need to be a worksheet or a list of facts to memorise.
Talk about what you notice. Take photographs. Collect fallen leaves. Draw something. Look up the answer to a question when you get home.
One observation can lead almost anywhere.
That's learning.

Our FREE September Activity Calendar is also ready, filled with simple ideas that families can pick from whenever they choose.
The dates are there as inspiration — not instructions.
Alongside it, the September Why Play Learning Magazine takes those ideas further with more than 30 activities to explore throughout the month.
Use one.
Use ten.
Do them in order.
Completely ignore the dates.
Learning doesn't stop being valuable because it happened on the “wrong” Tuesday!
💭 This Month's Question
What has your child become curious about recently?
Perhaps it's space.
Maybe it's dinosaurs.
Perhaps they suddenly want to know how a lock works, why leaves change colour, where their grandparents grew up or whether fish sleep.
Children's questions can take us in directions we never planned.
Sometimes those unexpected detours become the very best learning experiences.

A new academic year can make us feel as though we should have everything organised.

They need opportunities to ask questions, follow interests, try things, change their minds, make mistakes, laugh, explore and discover.
Some days will be wonderfully productive.
Some days won't.
Both are part of family life.
So as September begins, perhaps the best plan is simply to stay curious about where the next question might lead.
