I Can Show You brings together 30 flexible activities to help children explore how pictures, film and media communicate ideas, tell stories and influence what we think and feel.

Through shared watching, conversation and creative experiments, families can discover how music changes a scene, why we trust a character, what a photograph leaves outside its frame and what an advert wants us to do.

Inside, you’ll explore five sections:

• Watching with Purpose — notice details, pause a moment and discover something new in a familiar favourite.• Understanding Stories on Screen — explore characters, music, openings, endings and the relationship between books and films.• Reading the Image — investigate photographs, illustrations, viewpoint and mood, then create an image of your own.• Talking About What We Watch — share opinions, explore disagreements, make recommendations and imagine alternative versions.• The World Through a Lens — consider sources, check claims, compare reports and explore whose perspectives we see.

Different ways to join in

Children can participate through talking, pointing, drawing, acting, arranging objects, recording ideas or their usual communication aid. Independent reading and writing are not required.

Each activity includes a clear starting point, an optional extension, an explanation of the learning, flexible participation ideas and a short note for the adult.

Use it with home education or alongside school learning. Choose activities that suit your child’s interests and explore at a comfortable pace—there is no need to complete them in order.

You don’t need a background in media studies. Just curiosity and something to explore together.
