A Calm Space for Parents: Understanding Education Changes

There has been a lot of discussion recently about possible changes to home education in the UK.
If you’ve seen some of these conversations online, you might be feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or even worried about what it all means for your child.
You’re not alone in feeling that way.
But before anything else, it’s important to gently pause and take a breath.
Nothing has changed right now.
The proposed changes are still going through the legal process, and it will take time before anything becomes part of everyday practice. There is no immediate action needed.
Why this can feel unsettling
When we hear words like “registration,” “monitoring,” or “changes,” it can quickly bring up questions like:
Am I doing enough?
Do I need to change how I teach?
Should learning look more like school?
These are very natural thoughts.
But they often come from uncertainty, not from anything you are doing wrong.
🌿 A gentle reminder
You do not need to turn your home into a classroom.
You do not need to recreate school at home.
And you do not need to have everything planned perfectly.
Children learn in many different ways — through conversation, play, exploration, creativity, and everyday life.
These ways of learning are not “less than.”
They are often where the deepest learning happens.
🌿 What I’ll be creating next
Over the coming weeks, I will be adding a dedicated space on the WhyPlayLearning website to support parents with this. https://www.whyplaylearning.com/education-update
This will include:
a simple explanation of what is being proposed
a growing FAQ section based on real questions
practical language you can use when speaking with schools or local authorities
links to monthly updates so you can stay informed without feeling overwhelmed
a space for parents to share thoughts and experiences through the forum
The aim is to keep everything clear, calm, and supportive.

🌿 You are not alone in this
If you are home educating, or thinking about it, it’s easy to feel like you have to get everything right.
But learning doesn’t come from perfection.
It comes from connection, curiosity, and time spent together.
🌿 What’s Coming Next (And How We’ll Work Through It Together)
Alongside the April Education Update, I’m beginning to build a new space on the website to help parents understand what is happening — clearly, calmly, and without overwhelm.
This isn’t something that will be rushed or filled all at once.
Instead, it will grow over time.
🌿 Building a space that supports parents
Over the next few days and weeks, I’ll be adding:
a simple explanation of the proposed changes
a Frequently Asked Questions section, based on real concerns parents are sharing
practical guidance and language to help with communication
links to each monthly newsletter update
and a space for parents to talk and share experiences
This will not be about fear or pressure.
It will be about understanding.
🌿 A place for your questions too
If you’re unsure about anything you’ve heard, or have questions you’d like answered, you’ll be able to add them on the group page.
The FAQ section will grow based on what parents actually need — not just what is written in policy documents.
You don’t need to have all the answers.
We can work through this together.
🌿 Why this matters
When changes are discussed, it’s easy to feel like you need to do more, plan more, or make learning look more like school.
But learning doesn’t need to become rigid to be meaningful.
Children still learn through:
conversation
play
exploration
and everyday life
That hasn’t changed.
🌿 A gentle reassurance
Nothing has changed right now.
There is time to understand what is happening and what it may mean for your family.
You don’t need to rush.
🌿 Let’s keep this calm and supportive
If you’d like to be part of the conversation, you’ll be able to join the discussion on the website as this develops.
A space where parents can:
ask questions
share experiences
and support each other
Because no one should feel like they’re navigating this alone.
🌿 Looking ahead
Tomorrow, I’ll begin by adding the first FAQ section.
We’ll take it one step at a time.
🌿 A final thought
Education may continue to change, but one thing remains the same:
Children learn best when they feel supported, understood, and free to explore the world around them.
And that is something you are already giving them.
You don’t need to become a teacher to support your child’s learning.
You already are their most important guide.
